Jagaran: Not a wayside musing

Hi
If you are reading this, most probably you are an NITKian who wants to make a difference to the world around you. More importantly, you are someone who believes that to get something done, you need to take the first step. Most importantly, you know that energy is precious. And Jagaran is all about spreading and implementing that message.
Let me give you an example.
Do you know how much our college spends on its electricity?
It spends Rs. 8 lakhs. Not annually. Per month. Thats what all our lights and fans and comps which remain running in our hostels, in our absence, add up to. Now imagine what would happen if you are able to cut off 1 % of this expenditure. We save almost a lakh in a year. What does that require of us? Nothing much. A little alertness. A little awareness. Switch off when not required. Thats it.
What do we gain?
Well for starters, we reduce the load on our power systems. We also save thousands of tonnes of coal. We reduce carbon emissions which emanate from thermal plants which provide the bulk of our power. We hinder global warming. We help create a healthier environment. We breathe easy. We live a better life.
And thats just about power conservation.
How do we go about it?
Well for starters, we look at the psychological level. Stickers on every door. Classrooms. Hostels. Admin blocks. With something like,'Did you save energy today?' or 'Did you turn off the lights?' .
Follow that up with a hyper link to an intra net site. Which specifically tells us what ails our power system. And what could be done about it. Before the start of each of our plethora of fests, get people to realize that having fun can be done without wasting energy. Shaking people out of lethargy is the only way Jagaran can be successful.
The word Jagaran, when loosely translated, means 'an awakening'. It also means an increasing awareness. I firmly believe that each one of us in the long run will end up being a mentor. If at that point of time we are still able to maintain energy awareness, Jagaran would have been successful. Because you would have sown the seeds for a greener earth. And thats the best thing you could have ever done.
We are looking for ideas. We look forward to your participation. Feel free to send your ideas to saurab.nair@gmail.com Whether small or big, any contribution that you make will be an addition to the overall effort. We are technocrats. And pretty much the smartest in the nation. At the end of the day, if we do not conserve energy, no one else will.

Dude..good thinking..but the most important thing is to convert thoughts to actions..u have my support dude..

Energy used by our college is pretty minimal. What requires conservation is water. If u notice, the hostel tanks keep overflowing during the monsoons. I think a simple valve for each tank can save a lot of water.

Jagaran is an attempt at awareness. The power situation i quoted was just an example. Totally agree with the idea of valves. The more practical the idea, the better we can present it, the better people can relate to it, the easier it becomes to implement it.

Hi Saurab,

Cheers for coming up with such a novel concept. I appreciate your initiative, when everyone who matters in this college has turned a blind eye.

Looking forward to work with you,
Vikram

Hey dude i am in..!

And as Anil said we shouldn just restrict it to power... Whether it is saving water or reducing plastic... It eventually leads to energy consv...

A typical CRT consumes 74 Watts of energy to display a fully White screen, Where as a fully black screen consumes 59 Watts. So I think the first step would be for you to make your blog totally Black!!
so If u have say 100 visits per day, each viewing the site for 2 minutes you will be saying 15*5*100*30 = 225kWatt-hours per month or 2.7 Mega Watt-hours per year. In India we look at Rs. 3 per Kilo watt-hour so we save Rs 8100 per year.
But money isnt the real concern is it? No, its the lack of power thats the real problem.
As u can see above, how a small thing as this can help in conserving such great amounts of power. I am sure turning off a fan when you leave your room is far easier!!
The question is not if you can afford those few bucks extra but something more basic.....THERE "IS" NO POWER!!
So cheers on this new awareness campaign. Always glad to extending a helping hand.
Cheers again.

Great going. nice to see someone finally take the initiative. So whats stopping us then ?!? and yes its not just about energy, but the water, waste disposal in NITK read as garbage dumping in between 3rd and 4th block and so many other such things need to be dealt with. But for starters lets work on energy saving. am going to switch off my fan right now cs im not in my room :)

Jagaran should and will work out.

[Insert our standard opening lines :)]

Sounds like a good initiative.
It's probably worth getting strong buy-in from faculty for this.
Let me know if I can help.

Best of luck.

ppl..use blackle.com, its the black version of google, saves power if u r using a crt

the black screen does work with CRTs. but it works the other way with LCDs [black screens consume more power]. so take a poll on how many people who read your blog use CRTs and how many use LCDs and theme your blog appropriately.

don't get me wrong. i am all for the environment and all.

but my only khunnas is that the money that you guys will end up saving will go into the pockets of some prick cunt in the faculty or administration.
